Liz Life Guru

I’m Liz Reed, a licensed psychotherapist, author, and chef. I have a long history of working in addiction and the mental health field. From addiction facilities to psychiatric units and private practice. I’m also in recovery from alcohol for the past 20 years. Liz Life Guru is a podcast designed to help people with mental health and addiction issues. This is an action-oriented show that helps the listener understand the dynamics of their issues. This is achieved through education, personal experience, and science-based evidence. Broken down in honest easy-to-understand language. I feel that there is a method to “the madness”, and that a good laugh can cure many ills. There is hope for everyone with the proper support and guidance. I will help you to create a journey through life that is your own, one that you enjoy, not one you have to white knuckle through. Life should be ever evolving and interesting. Don’t stay stuck. You’ll be able to relate to the many stories and descriptions of how mental illness, trauma, and addiction shape who we are. I’m here to make sense of the senseless. I’m a problem solver and a life changer. Join me for a unique look at what’s bugging you. Namaste

Addiction of a Spouse

Thursday Jun 13, 2024

Thursday Jun 13, 2024

Dealing with loved ones that are in active addiction is horrible. Dealing with a spouse you agreed to stick by for better or worse can be another thing entirely. An addicted spouse when you have much invested in the relationship is hard to confront. This may include a home, children, family, finances, etc. This podcast will examine how to approach our spouse with concerns and fears. We will learn what to say and what not to say. Threatening your spouse and not following through will not help your loved one get sober. Imagine what your family and friends think of the situation. This can create a negative atmosphere for everyone involved. Let's look closely at what it takes to stay or go. Everyone deserves better….Namaste

Parenting Our Parents

Thursday May 30, 2024

Thursday May 30, 2024

Not everyone has parents who are willing to parent selflessly. Many parents turn to their children for advice or disclose far too much adult information to their children. This may seem harmless, but it may throw your child into an adult world they are not ready for. These children, and into adulthood feel that it is their responsibility to help with all decisions related to their parents. This becomes a cross to bear for the child, leading to anger, resentment, and frustration. In this podcast, I will share my journey with my mother and the toll it took on me. You can love your parents and still need some distance. In the world of boundary making this may be another you’ll need….just for good measure….Peace

In a world where customer service is non-existent, there was Kaitlyn my last straw! Listen, whether it’s work that gets you down or the people you encounter. There are ways to get around feeling like we are being walked on or disrespected. In this podcast, I will go over the tale of Kaitlyn and the straw that broke this camel's back. Standing up for yourself and getting what you need in the workplace or just out and about shouldn't be a reach. The common thread here is kindness and asking for what you need. We will look into the different ways that you can express your needs without creating a scene. Be well and be happy but get the respect you deserve!

Do you know someone who has you labeled and everyone else as a permanent letdown? These are the type of people that cannot be pleased. Their expectations of you are unreachable. It's as if we should be able to read their minds and anticipate their needs. This can be very challenging if it’s a family member, coworker, or boss. In the episode, I will explain the thinking of the self-centered person and how to handle their needs. People who treat us in this way do this because they can, we allow it. Navigating a relationship that isn’t easy to get out of is challenging. I’m here to help, so get a pad of paper and take notes on how to deal with the self-centered.

It’s Chemistry people… we choose people initially based on the chemistry we feel between us. It isn’t until later that we discover the reality behind our choice.  Many factors contribute to the people we decide to share our lives with. Within this episode, we will look at the factors and traits that aid in this decision.  In some cases, family and friends don’t care for our choice of partners. I will help to untangle this mess for you. Understanding our unmet needs and the complexity of our partner choice. So even if some say “you can do better” the partner you picked just may be the right choice for you!

Thursday Mar 07, 2024

Thursday Mar 07, 2024

Did you know I was a co-author of a great workbook? It’s a great book on how to start your mental health journey through writing and releasing. This technique has proven to be very successful for many of my patients. I use this technique myself. If you are considering working on your mental health and don’t know where to start or if you are in the middle, this book is for you. There is every topic that plagues our subconscious from A-Z. Start anywhere in the book and look for chapters that stand out to you. There is no right or wrong if you start somewhere. Life is full of obstacles and if seeing a therapist isn’t where you'd like to start, this is a great beginning. So be good to you and start your mental health wellness with Leave Your Sh*it here. It's a keeper!

In this 2-part podcast, Chris explains his time with his mother, situations, and decisions he had to make. Understanding her addiction and the recovery he faced himself long after she was gone. Chris is open in this interview and honest about the need to care for a parent who can't care for themselves. Chris shares how relating to others and seeking guidance and help left him in a less isolated place. Join me in a unique 2-part podcast with Chris Morris, We Are All Made of Scars.
